Other Livestock Development

Under the Other livestock development programme, the department has taken up activities for conservation of its indigenous livestock. Mithun, Yak, Bonpala & Tibetan breed Sheep and high altitude Pony are some of the livestock which are of enormous importance for the socio-cultural and economic activities for the subsistence living of the tribal farmers in the state. Mithun is regarded as one of the sacred animal which is of socio-cultural importance, Yak and Sheep are the animal of subsistence living by the highlanders of the state for its coarse wool used in carpet as well as clothing. Pony is the ultimate transporter in high altitude of the state as the states road communication is under developed and people still uses porter track for travelling from one area to another. .

In order to develop these indigenous animal a Mithun Breeding Farm at Sagalee in Papum-pare district, a Rabbit production centre at Tezu in Lohit district, A High altitude Pony Breeding Farm in Tawang, A Yak Conservation Centre at Chander in West Kameng District are established. Mithun Breeding Farm, Sagalee is the only such farm in the whole country with strength of 45 animals. In the farm a package of practice include Milking trials on Mithun Ploughing trials of the male Mithun have been successfully evolved in this farm. To develop the High altitude PONY which is used by the highlander the Pony Breeding Farm at Tawang undertakes scientifically breeding and multiplication of the pony which is than supplied to the highlander at subsidized rates.
